| San Diego’s PGA Tour Event Still Without Sponsor |
|
Organizers of San Diego's PGA Tour stop are unlikely to find a sponsor before the Jan. 28 tournament, leaving the PGA Tour to pick up much of the $5.3 million. The Century Club has tried, since August, to find a new sponsor after Buick pulled its support following the automaker’s bankruptcy. Even negotiations with more than a few companies did not yield a sponsor that would commit the $7-$10 million it takes per year to stage a tournament. The Torrey Pines tour stop is one of the PGA Tour's key events. It has come to be known as the official start of the PGA Tour season because it's usually the first tour event of the year in which Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson compete. In addition, Woods's celebrated U.S. Open win at Torrey Pines in 2008 added notoriety to a course that has some of the most amazing views in golf on the West Coast. |
